What Size Art to Hang Above a Sofa
Sep 22, 2026
You have a sofa you like and a wall above it doing nothing. Then comes the harder question, which is what size art actually looks right up there, because a piece that seems generous on a screen can look stranded once it is on your wall.
The good news is that this is arithmetic, not taste. There is a ratio that works, and once you know it the decision takes about two minutes.
Key takeaways
- Art above a sofa should span two thirds to three quarters of the sofa width.
- Hang it 6 to 10 inches above the sofa back, not at a fixed height from the floor.
- Measure the sofa, not the wall. The sofa is what the eye compares the art against.
- For sofas 84 inches and wider, a pair or a trio usually beats one piece.
- When torn between two sizes, go larger. Undersized art is the most common mistake in a living room.
What size art goes above a sofa?
Two thirds to three quarters of the sofa width. That is the whole rule.
Narrower than two thirds and the piece reads as an afterthought, with the wall swallowing it on both sides. Wider than the sofa itself and the arrangement goes top heavy, which makes the furniture look undersized rather than the art look generous.
The ratio holds whether you hang one piece or five. If you hang a group, measure the outer edges of the finished arrangement and apply the same two thirds.
Art size chart by sofa width
| Sofa width | Target art width | What that looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 60 in (loveseat) | 40 to 45 in | One 40 × 60 portrait, or one 36 × 24 landscape |
| 72 in | 48 to 54 in | One 32 × 48, or a pair of 24 × 18 |
| 84 in (the most common size) | 56 to 63 in | A pair of 30 × 40 with a 3 in gap |
| 96 in | 64 to 72 in | Three 24 × 18, or a pair of 36 × 48 |
| 108 in or a sectional | 72 to 81 in | A pair of 40 × 60, or three 30 × 20 |
All dimensions are in inches, width first.
How to measure your sofa
Measure the widest point, arm to arm, not the seat cushions. If the sofa has rolled or flared arms, that outer edge is what a person standing in the doorway actually sees, so that is the number to use.
If the sofa sits against a wall wider than itself, ignore the wall. A 72 inch sofa on a 14 foot wall still wants 48 to 54 inches of art. Filling the wall instead of the sofa is how living rooms end up looking like waiting rooms.
A worked example
Say you have an 84 inch sofa, the most common size sold in the United States.
- Two thirds of 84 is 56 inches. Three quarters is 63 inches. That is your target range.
- Our widest single piece is 40 inches, so one piece will not reach 56.
- Two pieces at 30 inches wide, with a 3 inch gap, gives you 63 inches. That lands at the top of the range.
- Hang them 8 inches above the sofa back, treating the pair as one rectangle and centring that rectangle on the sofa.
Total coverage: 63 inches across an 84 inch sofa, which is 75 percent. Correct.
Should you use one large piece or a set of two or three?
Below about 72 inches of sofa, one piece is simpler and usually better. Above 84 inches, a pair or a trio almost always looks more considered, and there is a practical reason as well as an aesthetic one: single pieces wide enough for a big sofa get expensive and awkward to ship, and they overwhelm a room with an 8 foot ceiling.
A few rules if you go with a group:
- Keep the gap at 2 to 3 inches and keep it identical everywhere. Inconsistent spacing is what the eye notices even when you cannot name what is wrong.
- Use one frame finish. Vary the size if you want variation. Mixing finishes across a pair reads as accidental.
- Odd numbers are easier to balance than even ones, with the exception of a symmetrical pair, which is its own thing and works fine.
If you are building something looser than a pair or a trio, that is a gallery wall, and it has its own rules. We wrote those up in how to hang a gallery wall.
How high above the sofa should you hang it?
Leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame.
Under 6 inches, the art looks stuck to the furniture and the two read as one lump. Over 10 inches, it drifts, and the art and the sofa stop looking related at all.
You may have read that art should be centred at 57 inches from the floor. That is a real rule, but it is a gallery rule, for art hung on a bare wall at standing eye level. Above furniture it does not apply. The sofa sets the height and the floor is irrelevant.
Adjusting for ceiling height
With 8 foot ceilings, stay near the 6 inch end of the gap and favour landscape orientation. Height is the scarce dimension, so do not spend it on empty wall.
With 10 foot ceilings or higher, open the gap to 10 inches and consider portrait pieces. A 40 × 60 hung above a sofa in a tall room does something a landscape piece cannot, which is to draw the eye up and make the ceiling feel intentional rather than merely large.
What if your sofa falls between two rows?
Round up. A 78 inch sofa sits between the 72 and 84 rows, and the 84 recommendation will look better than the 72 one.
This is the single most reliable piece of advice in this article. Almost nobody stands back from a finished room and wishes the art were smaller. Plenty of people wish they had gone bigger, and by then the holes are already in the wall.
Can the art be wider than the sofa?
Generally no, and here is the exception.
Art wider than the furniture beneath it makes the furniture look undersized. The eye reads the wider object as the anchor, and a sofa that is not the anchor of a living room looks wrong even to people who cannot say why.
The exception is a console table or a narrow credenza, where art slightly wider than the furniture can work because the furniture is not the focal point to begin with. Above a sofa, stay inside the sofa width.
Three sizing mistakes that are easy to avoid
- Measuring the wall instead of the sofa. This produces art that is technically proportional to the room and visibly wrong above the furniture.
- Hanging too high. Usually caused by applying the 57 inch gallery rule above a sofa. Use the 6 to 10 inch gap instead.
- Buying one size down to be safe. There is no safety in undersized art. It is the most common and most visible mistake in the category.
Size is half of it. Tone is the other half.
A correctly sized piece in the wrong register still looks wrong. If your room runs to warm neutrals, stone and taupe, a high contrast piece will fight it no matter how well proportioned. Our neutral collection exists for exactly this reason.
The frame matters as much as the art here. The frame is furniture, and it belongs to the room rather than to the painting. We covered how to choose between oak, walnut, black, antiqued gold and silver in how to choose a frame color.
How our sizes map to your sofa
Every piece we make comes in seven sizes, as an archival paper print or as a framed canvas in five finishes.
| Orientation | Sizes | Best above |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape | 24 × 18, 30 × 20, 36 × 24 | Loveseats, or in pairs and trios above wider sofas |
| Portrait | 30 × 40, 32 × 48, 36 × 48, 40 × 60 | Tall rooms, narrow sofas, or in symmetrical pairs |
Not sure whether to order framed or unframed? We compared them in canvas or paper print.

Frequently asked questions
What size art goes above a standard 84 inch sofa?
Aim for 56 to 63 inches of total art width. A pair of 30 × 40 pieces with a 3 inch gap between them gives you 63 inches, which is the arrangement we recommend most often.
How high should art hang above a couch?
6 to 10 inches above the top of the sofa back. Do not use the 57 inch gallery rule above furniture, because it produces art that hangs too high and looks disconnected from the sofa.
Should art be centred on the sofa or on the wall?
Centre it on the sofa. If the sofa is off centre on its wall, the art should follow the sofa, not the wall. The two objects need to read as a single arrangement.
Is one large piece or two smaller pieces better above a sofa?
Below 72 inches of sofa, one piece. Above 84 inches, a pair or a trio, because single pieces wide enough for a large sofa overwhelm most rooms and are harder to ship and hang.
What if I have a sectional?
Measure only the section the art will hang above, not the full L. Treat that run as if it were a standalone sofa and apply the same two thirds rule.
